NELSON COLLEGE PTA – SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE

The Nelson College PTA are in the process of launching a PTA Scholarship Program to enable at least two Nelson College students to attend “life changing” programs each year.  2019 is the first year this will be offered and the PTA intends to evaluate each program on an annual basis.

PURPOSE:
The NC PTA currently funds students who are representing the College in sporting, cultural and academic pursuits nationally and internationally and now wishes to extend that support to a student who may be struggling to achieve their potential and one other lucky student who is selected by “ballot”.

DELIVERY in 2019:
To offer 2 “scholarships” supporting 2 boys to attend the 10 Day Development Program currently run by the Spirit of New Zealand Trust.

This program is considered the best aligned with the PTA Scholarship program goals with the following particular attributes:

  • 10 Day duration is achievable within school holidays minimising disruption to study
  • Achievable in timeframe and content for less confident students
  • Well proven
  • Existing financial support - $500 per student awarded by Nelson City Council and $1,000 from Ministry of Social Development leaving $2,000 to fund per berth. This additional funding plus PTA fundraising may allow us to offer more than 2 berths pa.

ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY & ALLOCATION:

DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP:
To be awarded by ballot to any eligible Nelson College student.  Application forms will be available from the College Reception or downloaded online and circulated where appropriate.

GROWTH SCHOLARSHIP: To be jointly nominated by the College Counsellors at their discretion to a student who is expected to gain the most from the 10 day Development Program.

Eligibility for both scholarships require:

  • Must be an enrolled student of Nelson College between the ages of 16 and 18 years at the time of the berth (as required by the SOA Trust)
  • Available on the nominated date of the sailing
  • Accept the T&Cs as defined by the Spirit of Adventure Trust (including Medical requirements)
  • The NC Leadership Team reserve the right to veto any ballot winner and the ballot will be re-drawn.
